If you used any part of this guide, please let me know. As you know, I made this whole structure based on the way I usually teach monologue writing to groups of students, but I wrote a lot of the words on these 13 pages over 4 days, and I don’t have the ability to test-drive it with a class the way I usually would with a new lesson or residency plan. If you choose to only do part of this guide, let me know. It’s useful for me to know what works, what doesn’t, and why you feel that way. If you have any questions about any part of this guide, please let me know. Think of it as raising your hand virtually, and I’ll call on you as soon as I can, the way I would do if we were in a classroom together. |
I’m always trying to get better as a teaching artist. Your feedback really helps me to improve my exercises. Don’t think you’ll hurt my feelings if any or all of the above felt unmanageable, confusing, or anything else. I want to improve it all, and you help me figure out how.
If you want to share your work with someone who will definitely read it and respond, please let me know. Feel free to SHARE it with me. I will respond.
Finally, THANK YOU for making art, especially in this strange time in our world!

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
- Thank you for working through this model of monologue writing! I made it between April 6th and April 8, 2020, in what I’m thinking of as Week 4 of coronavirus quarantine
- Most of the work that I do is in classrooms, with students, and not interacting with students on a daily basis has been very challenging for me
- However, turning what is typically a 12-week residency structure into a self-guided monologue writing program has felt like a good, useful step in helping and encouraging students like you to write a monologue
- I know writing a monologue is a lot of work… I’m a playwright myself. And I know the kind of labor of love that writing a monologue can be. However, I also know first-hand about the value of writing and sharing dramatic work.
- Working with thousands of students over the past fifteen years to help them write and perform original works of drama, I’ve seen many students get a lot out of this work.
