Daniela Alfaro, Independence Charter 8th grader and student of Teacher Julie Lenard and Teaching Artist Justin Jain, shared her play “What Happens in Church Stays in Church!” during her class’s mini-festival on May 31. Her play, about a lesbian relationship punished by townspeople in front of a church, is one of several courageous visions in mini-festivals across all of our schools. On June 13, 2012, students of Teacher Joshua Rothstein at J.R. Masterman school presented scenes from the plays they’ve been creating in their yearlong playwriting workshops led by Philadelphia Young Playwrights Teaching Artist Kate McGrath. The Philadelphia Tribune featured our programming at General George G. Meade School (spearheaded by Teacher Lori Odum and Teaching Artist Dwight Wilkins) in a great article about arts enrichment programs at the school. CLICK HERE to read the article! On March 1st, a group of Young Playwrights from Central High School (accompanied by their Teaching Artist Chris Bresky) attended the School District of Philadelphia’s District-wide Principals’ and Assistant Principals’ Meeting. The meeting, which had a focus on combatting school bullying, featured improvised scenes from the students around bullying and cyberbullying. It was a historic moment, as students had never before been in a professional development session for principals. See footage of their scenes, as well as the students talking with Philadelphia Comimission on Human Relations Chairperson Kay Kyungsun Yu. |
