Congratulations on completing your play!  This accomplishment is testament to your creativity, hard work and perseverance.

Follow the instructions and tips on this page to submit your play to Philadelphia Young Playwrights' Annual Playwriting Festival.  Your play will be read by members of our Literary Committee, and you will receive a written response to your work.

All plays submitted to our Festival will be eligible for submission to the National Young Playwrights Festival.

Please note: By submitting your play to our Playwriting Festival, you are giving Philadelphia Young Playwrights, a nonprofit organization, permission to produce your play, or use your play, now or in the future, for other purposes such as play readings and in published anthologies of winning plays, without monetary compensation.

  • Scripts must be in Standard American Format. (Click the "Style Sheet" PDF for instructions on this format)
  • Scripts must be typed (dark enough to be read easily), page-numbered, and stapled with just one staple in the upper left side or they will not be read.
  • Scripts submitted to previous Young Playwrights Festivals are not eligible without significant revision and teacher's recommendation.
  • Monologues, musicals, and screenplays are not eligible, nor are adaptations of other authors' works.

Some Points to Remember

  • In plays, the story should be told through speech and action rather than just description.
  • Avoid using too many characters, we suggest 8 maximum.
  • In the theatre, unlike film or television, you cannot easily switch from one setting to another. Keep in mind that whatever you write must be able to be produced on a stage in front of a live audience.
